Oliver,
Yep. Thats the question. You make a great point.
AND, my hypothetical projection of a new stronger Symphony/Composer feature set
assumes an awful lot.
Without those assumptions or great progress it is even simpler to say kill the
thing. That's been my opinion all along.
Terry opined that it may be 18 or 24 months before substantial differences could
emerge. By that time the Symphony nameplate will be damaged and worthless beyond
repair anyway. Folks will be even more ticked off.
As the products stand now, it is a weak separation. Merge them.
If the products were merged, there are things Avid could do to make current
Symphony owners feel right.
Think it would further focus their efforts, eliminate some expenses and simplify
things for users.
Avid would still also get a premium of sorts from folks like me who prefer to
stick to their hardware. Nitris DX especially with add in cards for AVC Intra
makes a much bigger difference to Composer than Symphony options.
(You don't want to get me started on 3rd party hardware.)
If Avid was able to develop a high end editor in the future or solve the
DS/Composer riddle then they could get right back into the premium NLE
business.
Option packages for 3D, Script Sync, Phrase Find, 4:4:4 output could possibly
let Avid grab some additional dollars for the time being. Maybe there are some
others.
Anyone have any suggestions for Avid to help them find features to make Symphony
stand apart from Composer. Seems like a backwards way of going about it.
Your line of thinking makes sense to me.

If the argument is to have better quality throughout the product (Symphony),
then that should equally benefit both MC and Symphony. So we are back at - why
have a separate product at all?
