Well. That is a good question.
Couple of reasons.
We know them backwards and forwards, warts and all. Learning takes a lot of
time.
We have a 7 seat Windows based Avid workgroup so any reactionary changes would
mean substantial investment. 4 Symphonys and 3 Composers. All current. (We also
have one lonely OS X Smoke).
The above represents quite an investment in time and money. I would like a
return on it.
That is what taking care of your customers is all about.
Avid's do many things well.
Composers are excellent "cut-n-trim" editors. Composer does a very good job
handling multiple resolutions and frame rates. Media management can be good.
Symphony does nice realtime down and cross converts. Etc.
Most important to us is workgroup and shared workflow.
To extend my earlier metaphor. These are Chevy Cavalier things. The product,
complete with problems, still seems like a good value at the Composer price
point.
Those problems and issues become a heck of lot less acceptable at Symphony's
"Cadillac" price point, hurt by being anchored to Nitris DX hardware.
It just doesn't measure up to the marketing. Talking the walk, not walking the
walk.
And that is what this thread was about...Symphony. I've owned one since 1999.
Seen this "advanced online finishing" rodeo twice before.
I think Avid and their customers are best served by one unified product. Makes
friends in the short term and lets us be presently surprised if the product
grows up or features are added later.
Yes I am a critic, a gullible one. I like happy endings.
I hope Avid does get it right.
Hope is a lot different than "know".
So when I see stuff that needs fixing, I pipe up.
Want to go over the list again?

Chris, why do you even continue to use Avid in your shop? You seem to have so
much animus towards them, and absolutely zero faith in the future. So why are
you still in?

If you want to donate to Red Cross quake relief, you can do so through your cell phone. Text redcross to 90999 to make a $10 donation. It will be on your next cell bill.
