Of course Avid saw some value in DS as a product (either to have, or
to withhold from Sony). But in buying Softimage, they also negotiated
a "non-aggression pact" (my interpretation) with Microsoft and thus
eliminated a huge potential competitor. Note this Microsoft press
release isn't titled "Microsoft to sell SoftImage" but "Microsoft to
Own Minority Stake in Avid; Strategic Relationship Formed":

How much was that worth, to get a peace treaty with Microsoft?
