Re: [Avid-L2] LTO 5 lifespans...

Howdy-

Specs from the HP website:

³1,000,000 passes on any area of tape, equates to over 20,000 end to end
passes/260 full tape backups.²

I can¹t imagine a restore cycle being more damaging than a write cycle.

HP has stuff on their site explaining why HP tape is better than other
brands. Sony, the brand I use, has stuff on their site explaining why Sony
tapes are better.

We archive and restore Avid media as you do, never had a problem restoring.
We also do short term server backups to tapes that are used dozens of times,
never had a problem. The software does a full compare after backing up in
addition to the drive¹s own read after write checking so we know each and
every tape is readable.

Very rarely, like once a year, we will have a ³can¹t write to media² sort of
error, which could also be dirty heads instead of a defective tape.

Being the overly cautious type myself, since you know that certain tapes
will be needed periodically, you could make a second copy of those projects,
perhaps stored off site in case of disaster.
