Thanks for the involved explanation. I think the "sweet spot" for Smoke-Mac is as a finishing/hero system in a short-form post environment built around FCP collaboration. Fast, creative cutting on FCP, then finishing with the client in the room using Smoke.

Ultimately the effects/Symphony/DS/MC question boils down to the "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none" conundrum. Smoke and DS work best when you have that person who is good at many things in the driver's seat. That's not everyone, so the the dilemma is whether enough people can do it - or think they can - to drive sufficient sales to warrant the effort by Avid to invest the R&D. Had DS been properly marketed, were a cross-platform product and sold as software-only for $2500, then this would be an entirely different discussion, because I believe the sales would have been there.

If the argument is to have better quality throughout the product (Symphony), then that should equally benefit both MC and Symphony. So we are back at - why have a separate product at all? OTOH, certain features - like full-quality S3D finishing - would be something that could justify a separate product and wouldn't be something that would have to be put into MC. Or possibly a turnkey system that uses an OEM version of the upcoming AJA 5K hardware I/O system. Just a few thoughts.
