Well... Remember there's Avid Studio (formerly Pinnacle). Not free, but very cheap. That's Avid's answer to iMovie or maybe Vegas. It probably outsells all Avid pro products combined by an order of magnitude. Maybe even outsells iMovie, although I have no facts to back that up, other than sheer PC versus Mac system volume.
My point is that Avid has some interesting ideas under its wings that could be added to the development effort - if you go beyond the narrow focus of MC/Sym/DS.
