How many times in just recent memory has a new MC version with a previously undiscovered major problem been posted on the Avid site, only to be yanked within hours and replaced with either a 0.0.x patch or rolled back to the previous build while a patch or CPR build is worked up?

Even were that the case, that's not the point. It's the loss of QA control / chain of custody that's the issue. Beyond the PITA of trying to put the brakes on a bad build's torrent - it's all Avid's reputation would need for someone to drop some malware into a torrent distro and reseed into the wild.
