Beyond boot and launch speedups, do you find any performance
improvements with editing?

BTW- OWC makes nice MacBook Pro upgrade kits. You get a new blank
drive in an external case (your choice of interfaces), transfer data
to that drive, then install that new drive into your laptop. The old
laptop drive then goes into the case for use as an external.
