A drive has electro-mechanical parts which are more prone to failure. And since it takes more retooling to rebuild a tape transport (witness betamax, beta, betaSP, digibeta, HDcam, HDcamSR all with the same transport), then it does to design a new connection interface for a drive (Thunderbolt anyone?), we have a harder time keeping the hardware to operate a drive just a few years old.
