Hmm.. I see what you mean. I'm not sure on these system, but I recall with FCP and a Kona card you could capture either way in the past. In the case of XDCAM-HD, this one shop would regularly use the FAM mode of the players over FW400. That's data and not video, of course.

I wasn't trying to be flip. It's just that in my experience, SDI capture has proven to be superior to direct FW capture for DVCAM and DVCPROHD from tape, so I guess I don't see the need. The same shop mentioned above, used CAV out of their DVCAM deck into AJA Io or AJA Kona instead of direct FW400. The video looked better, we had more codec choices and the workflow matched all the other formats. Just patch whatever you needed and you are good to go. Plus, I've seen too many decks where the FW interface was burnt out and no longer functional.
