Yes, for Panasonic workflows... it's going to be an important codec, and it seems that they intend for it to replace DVCProHD. A hardware device to speed up native editing in that codec will no doubt be interesting to some people.
But, really, it sounds like the Aja IO Express is going to be just fine. I do wish it supported component input, since Beta tapes still make an occasional appearance in my documentary world, but it's becoming less and less necessary. Most stock footage now comes as a downloaded Quicktime, and most footage comes in from the field either in tapeless formats or in formats that can be captured via Firewire, like DVCProHD or HDV. Everything is going tapeless pretty fast, and I actually just delivered a NOVA hour that I onlined a couple of weeks ago on a hard drive. I think that kind of thing will be more and more common. The need for something like the Kona is really disappearing, I think, even at the high end.
I do feel that, after all these years, Avid is really working hard to deliver the kinds of products that we need.
