Open ' /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility'
When you connect the drives do they show up on the right hand side w/ the lower part greyed out?

If so, select the grey partition, and press the 'mount' button.

If not - then you've got a hardware issue somewhere between the drive, drive case, cable, port on mac, and mac logic board.
(I'll hope for the 'bad cable' fix for you)
