Re: [Avid-L2] 3D? hee hee hee

So if the 3D disappears after you get absorbed in the story, why do 3D? And if you have to pull out of the story form time to time to appreciate the effect that you paid the extra money for, why do 3D?

This is my whole objection to stereo cinema. No matter what anyone says, the whole point of 3D is to be noticed. Because again, if it's not noticed then why do it? And if it is noticed, then plainly the shot is about the depth effect, which means it's no longer about the story.

To say that 3D gives filmmakers another tool in their kit is a complete canard. Because in order to make room for 3D in your bag of tricks, you have to take out a lot of your other tools (like all your other lenses except for a 32mm, for example).

3D evangelists like to say that clever filmmakers will find ways to integrate 3D into the story so that it becomes just another part of the experience. But that's sophistry at its best. Again, you don't spend all that time and money (a lot of it) on something that you want to become invisible. Because at the point at which it does become invisible, the reason to do it vanishes right along with it.
