RE: [Avid-L2] 3D? hee hee hee

Murch is saying that a big problem is that our brains are not accustomed to
converging and focusing at different planes, and that is what causes
headaches and extra effort. I wonder if it is a matter of training. You
can wear glasses that turn everything upside down and eventually see right
side up, if you look at a blue viewfinder long enough, it will turn B&W.
The brain and eyes are very adaptable, and I think if you watch a lot of
(well done) 3D, they may just get the hang of it. Of course you have to pay
a premium for the opportunity to practice. Fast cuts are a problem, but it
makes me think of arguments against classical editing in the very beginning.
People thought cutting back and forth from wide to close and all over the
place would be confusing for audiences, because the natural way of seeing
would seem to be an unbroken wide shot. I think audiences are trained to a
degree by what they are seeing- the "MTV generation" can handle a fast cut
style that would seem a blur to a viewer in the 50s.

It is important to get there early enough to sit far enough back for the
whole screen to be contained within the view of the glasses. I saw Tron
that way and it didn't feel like extra work compared to Tangled, where I was
close enough that I needed to move my eyes more to take in the whole image.
The converging and focusing at different planes does not feel like more
effort to me, but maintaining that while moving my eyes around the screen
does.

That said, I like to see my movies for $6.50 at the matinee so I don't go to
the 3D version unless it is some kind of free screening or the only option
available. The 3D disappears after I get absorbed in the story, and I feel
like I need to pull out of the story from time to time to appreciate the
effect that I paid the extra money for.
