Well had my problem really been related to a sticky track ball here is what support suggests;
Out of the box the Expert Mouse Trackball still contains machine lubrication from the factory which can prevent the ball from rolling smoothly in the base. To restore a smooth rolling experience simply wipe the ball with your hands for 30 seconds to replace a thin coat of lubrication. The ball should not be cleaned with water, alcohol, or other cleaners, as this will completely remove the lubrication from the ball.

The pointer would drag along smoothly and then make radical jumps half way across the hue offset vector display. I tried cleaning the ball and the cup no change. Restarted several times and unplugged the main frame. Finally updated from mouse works to Track Ball Works but still the problem persisted. Finally I noticed there was a microsoft optical mouse that had been place or perched on a pin lying on the desk. I don't use the mouse much so I hadn't noticed it tittering on a pencil. Turns out when I reach forward for hue offset I sometimes bump the table just enough to shake the wobbly mouse to make the pointer jump. So the lesson here is before spending the morning playing with you track ball check that the mouse
