Then there is the fact that digitizing the footage is often our first chance to see it and take notes.  Kinda hard to edit when you have no idea what the footage looks like but the client says "we shot for 4 days and I'll bring my drive over at 9 and we can be ready by 9:30, right!" Then you ask for script notes and the answer is "huh"!

The 'no surprises on output' factor runs parallel to the change we
experienced when we no longer had to wind tapes back and forth to find
shots. With that, we increased the chance of missing odd and stolen moments
which would fly by during rewind and fast-forward.
