Well, not really. Most open source projects have some sort of "gate keeper" organization to control the integrity of the product and code base. Add-ons like you mentioned only happen if the code is there to do that in the first place. You already have a lot of that with FCP and XML anyway.

I believe EditShare is (or will be) selling that as part of their own turnkey version of LightWorks. I'm not sure about this open source version, but it is supposed to support (or will in the future) the Contour shuttles.
