Re: [Avid-L2] NAS advice...?

Jay

My bad, I always assume the worst, like you might want to do something
with the material. :)

Nearline, schmearline, online, offline.

The costs of running with scissors have dropped so much in the past few
years. I picked up a MS server for home use with 1TB, 3 empty drive
slots and the ability to add external storage, for $250C a few months
back. I'd try and make a joke about how much cheaper this would have
been in the US but I am not sure what the conversion rate is right now.
If I leave them powered up it backs up all my machines each night if I
don't it lets me know there may be a problem.

That said given that I regularly see drives for about $90C /T how cheap
do you want your storage to be? I remember when filling this array up
wouldn't even let me sneeze at a 9G Avid drive not that many years back.
I do not mean to denigrate Robert's decision by any means but this
really is chump change unless it is for your family memories and even
then this isn't any more expensive than a couple of kit lenses for a
DSLR and less than a good prime.

My buddy down the road runs a (20 Gig last I asked) raid for his home
video and audio. So easy even his wife can run it. Obviously not a
problem anyone on this list or their spouses would have. He just got
tired of righting cheat sheets for her and then having to come upstairs
to sort it out anyway.

Now to work...

I do not know what Ron would recommend or what it would cost but I sure
think I would phone just to get a ball park.

If the drive is to go to the production at the end copy it to or drop it
in a USB drive case when it goes out.

Spread the cost over two programs if you must.

Otherwise what you want is a LaCie drive. Sigh.

Now I am beginning to feel like Bob or maybe Jimmy.

Hey you kids, get off my lawn!
