House on 5D (was Re: [Avid-L2] Re: OT: How much perception influences editing critique)

It was a letdown for me after the publicity/hype leading up to it. I felt
the show looked okay, but lacked richness and punch. And on a 52" screen,
it suffered in comparison to the adjacent commercials in both color
richness and resolution. Several of the scenes looked closer to standard
def. I have watched a lot of eps of House on this monitor and it normally pops.

I wonder if in color grading they weren't able to push things - the blacks
seemed washed out & the colors dull. There were subtle but odd color casts
in some of the shots. I find it hard to believe that was the look they were
going for...

Of course, they were able to get shots in tight spaces that would be
impractical with standard cameras, and the resulting feeling of
claustrophobia was a plus for those scenes.
