Apple change their tune? LOL! I think they figure they don't really need NAB, IBC, MacWorld and other events to get their message out. After all, they are still in the business to make a BIG profit. A lot of these moves save money. Look at the lack of packaging and printed documentation with the FCP7 release. You can masquerade it as a "green" effort, but the reality is that it saved a TON of money. There's also no Apple sponsorship for the LAFCPUG SuperMeet, AFAIK.
Put the money for trade shows into the Apple Stores and you probably get a much bigger return. So, I can't say that they are making the wrong move. They really don't NEED to be at NAB. Avid does - and so do GVG, Autodesk and Quantel.
Unfortunately no rumors that I would consider credible. Apple is pretty tight with info. No loose lips there or there's hell to pay. Besides, I pretty much agree with Philip Hodgetts' timeline on what's going on inside ProApps. If he's right, then I'm being highly optimistic suggesting that there might be some news on the FCP front in fall. That's only a GUESS on my part anyway.
If you are interested in the FCP ecosystem, then listen for what Noise Industries will add around NAB time (only at the SuperMeet), as well as other plug-in folks, like Wes Plate, CoreMelt, etc.
One intriguing item is 'get' - a phonetic speech search engine for FCP using Nexidia's technology (http://getphonetic.com/) . They are being repped by AV3 Software (Graham Sharp's new company).
Maxx Digital and Small Tree will also be showing off their simple, "SAN-less" shared storage solutions.
