I hear you and concur...but one thing I like about being on the most-recent
version of Photoshop is that I never (at least that I recall) have problems
exchanging files (both from and to) graphics artists and departments. Just
one less set of headaches.
Also, I do some After Effects work, and for that I do use some more-recent
features in Photoshop...mainly the sort of workflow stuff Steve¹s been
mentioning
And the upgrade price for Photoshop CS4 is US$200 (at least back to versions
of Photoshop from 2004 or so). Not sure what pricing and non-bundled
availability will be for CS5, and not sure if Adobe will continue the
plain/extended split. But I guess we¹ll know in a couple weeks.
