Are you sure it's AVCHD and not AVC-Intra? Those are two different beasts. For the AVCHD you will need to convert them outside of Media Composer. Panasonic has a free tool but it only works for Panasonic's cameras.

When you use AMA, are you CONSOLIDATING the footage? If you use
access via AMA, and then dismount the tapeless media, or the drive
containing the backup, the files will be offline. You need to drag
the files into a new bin, then consolidate them. Or are the clips
showing up in the AMA window, but are somehow offline?

AVCHD, I believe that you need ClipWrap for that. But I am not 100%
positive.
