> Looking at using this to back up hard drives, prepare drives for
clean install, etc. What is the general feeling about this software?
What do you end up with on the "target" drive? Is it one "folder"
that is a clone of your drive or what? Red flags?
I say:
I use it all the time. It can make an exact identical twin of one
drive onto another (this entails wiping the entire target drive
clean). The result is two identical drives (clones).
It can alternatively make a disk image of a drive that's written to
another drive. I do this to back up my system drive. This procedure
will give you a disk image of the source drive on your target drive
(if enough space is available. Other files on the target drive are
left alone).
CCC can also selectively back up: That is, you don't have to clone an
entire source disk; you can select what NOT to copy over.
CCC can "synchronize" disks, updating only newer data. If you've
previously created a 'clone' disk, CCC can synchronize to it from the
source disk and copy only the changed data. This saves cloning time.
It can also clone in segments. This is what you'd do if your source
drive is larger than a single target, like a DVD. CCC can divide one
large source drive into smaller pieces for saving on a set of DVD's.
Note that, as I recall, CCC cannot copy directly to DVD's. You must
make segmented disk images which can be saved onto DVD's. Since this
is inconvenient, I've never used this feature.
You can schedule backups so that they occur automatically.
Oh, it's free, except you should donate to Bombich Software because
it's so damn useful (I have).
Red flag (a very small one) might be that you should be sure to use
the correct version for your version of the Mac OS. Also a minor
consideration is you must be able to log on as Administrator to use CCC.
