[Avid-L2] Re: OT: Iridas SpeedGrade

Seen it, and others like it. The challenge is finding the market to justify the price difference. If you have that market, it makes sense. If not, then you have to live with the tools that are in our universe.

To me, there are two approaches to CC. One is the "I've finished all my creative editing, and I only want to color correct". In that world there are a ton of possibilities from Color on the low end to Pablo on the high end. With Scratch somewhere in the middle.

The other approach is the "I'm still futzing with the show, adjusting effects, maybe even editing, etc. and I want to color correct while I do that" camp. This is where Symphony still rules assuming you offlined in Avid. No one else has as smooth and full featured a workflow for this world.

So, you trade off the speed of hardware acceleration and finer controls in the high end systems, for more rendering and less fine controls and feature sets in the lower end. The hardware speed can be made up for by the Symphony's one stop shop and source side color approach. But the lack of feature sets and higher than 10 bit control is painful at times.

Of course, if Avid ever decided to own this section of the market, it wouldn't take much to get Symphony to that level. I gave up holding my breath for that one about 8 years ago.
:-(

To answer your original question, SpeedGrade is interesting, but the choice of a higher end tool should be carefully examined in how it relates to the rest of your workflow, ease of training operators, and future proofing to ensure a decent return on your investment.
