Re: [Avid-L2] Re: OT: Canon 5D 24p firmware, WARNING

Michael,

BEWARE, the QTchange application does NOT alter the FPS of a QT, it sets the
playback duration.
It sounds silly (and i don't grasp either what is happening), but it is
something else inside QT.
Now perhaps Avid uses this to get a correct import, FCP definitly does NOT.
So i defintitly recommend to use the IgnoreQTrate = TRUE console command.

The 5d / 7d support for the app. is more for indeed removing tracks if
needed, but more to add TC to the clips.
(Since Avid nowadays uses the TC inside the QT on import, that can be handy
and make Metacheat less needed).

But Metacheat can still be handy, as Avid does not support Reelnames / AuxTC
from the QT...

Few other observations:
In FCP, if you import a 30 FPS clip and put it on a 29.97 timeline, the
frame relation is 1:1 for video.
Audio however gets out of sync and needs to be slowed down.

If i find some time i'll add an 'extract audio' to the QT tools app.
(but any compression package can do so already)

There are a couple things I do;

1. If .mov file is V only, then I use the "ignoreQtrate true" in the console
and get a frame for frame import resulting in a .1% slow down. when
recording double system, record audio at 48048 and set import to slow down
.1%. Both will be in sync.

2. If .mov file has audio, use QT Pro to create a V only file and do step 1.

3. If .mov file has audio, you can use Bouke's excellent tool (Mac only);
QTChange. It can either remove the audio track and do step 1, or change it's
play rate to be 29.97 eliminating the need for the console command.

I use this for a lot of different little needs.

Happy New Year to all! And Oliver, see you in about 3 weeks in sunny
Orlando.
