[Avid-L2] Re: Quadrature like error on BetaSP ?

Thought it's time to update this thread with the fact that since I've pointed out the error they have repeated the error on 3 out of the last 4 dub orders. This is a large dub house with a sister post house and they can't seem to make betasp dubs without severe quadrature error and head switching problems. I imagine the problems stems from trying to do everything at once because when we send back one of the digibeta closed caption masters, that they encoded on the same dub order, the resulting betasps are dubs are fine. Whatever the configuration error what's the deal doesn't anybody do any QC? Oh yeah they do the QC there on our closed captioned digibeta master too. How come they don't even look at the betasp dubs? I'm torn as to what the professional thing to do is regarding anonymity. I would really like to let people who might use the place for dubs know what to watch for. I don't know how many versions of dubs from my masters have gone out unchecked. I work hard to make things look decent and I don't appreciate a bad dub making things look noticably worse. Oh well time to reopen my last batch of "Shut Up", right?

Since the source was from digibeta and all the dubs which were done on various machines all exhibit the quadrature error there must be something in how they are feeding all the beta machines. Either the closed captioning encoder or something that is transcoding the signal to get it into betas is what I suspect. I'll be curious to see what the redubs look like. The difference will be they will just be dubbing straight from one of the already closed captioned digibetas and not having to insert the cc data. I'd hate to think they have a router issue, don't know if it's composite or component feeding the betasps. Also 4 out of 5 had head switching errors some 8 lines up and some 2 lines up into active video. Really surprising for a relatively large scale edit/dubbing facility and it's not the first time we've seen the head switching problem from them.
