[Avid-L2] Re: Bad Tape glitch fixing?

If you'er really stuck I have the skills and kit to get the most from a transport re-alignement if you want to posts the tape off. We're based in London UK.

Re tape speeds. DVCam is nearly half as fast as STD DV and is why the MINIDV 60 min tapes give you 40 min recording. As said the faster tape speed alters the track angle and density of media used per byte of data laid down so dropout performance is better in theory. But DV tapes are metal evaporate just like the old Hi8 tapes and we know how good they were for dropout and may have contributed to the practice in the field of avoiding repeated playback of tapes or re-using stock.
DVCam is better but the same tape so only slightly better.
Compatabilty of DVCam (the ability to play any recorded tape in any player) is better then MiniDV which can be very varied (many MiniDV camcorders have "sloppy" tape transport alignments making for incompatible recordings)
MiniDV LP is the devils work and allows twice (I think) the recording time out of a tape (so 2 hours I think on a 60 mini tape) so a great oppertunity to save stock cost. ANd hell on earth to reliably playback!

Given their inability to WB I doubt they would ever have the time to actually do a test record before hitting the field. I think if anyone ever handed me a test tape to see if it played in my machine before they went out there would be a 911 call to restart my heart. Okay enough, I realize it's easy to bitch in the bay I'm not out there humping equipment around with no time to set lights etc... and some of the best people have been burned by whacky tape stock or transport issues. A little white balance every now and then might make me feel a little better.

I'm feeling like the vhs 6 hour mode that never worked in professional vhs decks, or should I say high end semi professional vhs decks?
