magical back in the day. Actually we still are as a proper edit is a thing
of beauty. Now I've given it all up to flip burgers. Literally. I bought a
food truck, moved to Cincinnati and am quite happy. (café de wheels) I know
I have a reasonable body of work and have enjoyed my requisite 15 min/fame.
It was fun. All the clueless director/editor/producer/writer melange can
kiss my #$%^ !

If they're looking for an Assistant to put in one day per week, then that's
an okay rate I think.
Otherwise, they're out of their minds. Hopefully, it's a typo.

Actually, it makes me laugh.

Oh, the irony.
There's another half-dozen great lines just like this in this ad.

Aw, just sounds like one of those "no money, fresh out of school" gigs,
really, almost an internship. I don't see this as a threat to established
professionals like ourselves. I used to do this sort of thing myself, and
not for $300 a week, but generally for free.
It cracks me up how often these "job" posts use the word "motivated" in
their lists of requirements. Uh, yeah.

This reminds me of an old joke, only in reverse. I want to write back
and say:
"$300 a day? I can't work for only $300 an hour!"
(The old joke is: "A son asks his father for $6 in allowance money.
The dad replies "$5? What do you need $4 for?")

Steve,
This moron needs a wake-up call. I think you should reply, just as you
stated. I think we all should all reply and rip this ego-centric, self-
serving little snot of a director a new one. His ad is a psychological
horror, as I am sure the job would be for whoever is stupid enough to
take it. You can make more at Burger King and leave after an 8 hour day.

I read this as;
You've pissed off all the people who helped you up to now and your project
hasn't gone anywhere so now the extra footage is going to save it. But wait
no one will speak to me anymore. I know I'll find someone new to save my
project.

Am still haveing trouble taking MPEG2 files into Encore and this is
driving me nuts -
Workflow - Avid, reference file, Squeeze - DVD Large, with top encoding
rate reset to 8000, and Iframes at 12.
When I take the video file into Encore, the last 10% of the file is
black. For example, my file is 4:02. Audio runs right to 4:02, but
video runs fast, to 3:50, and the last 10 seconds is black.
Files work fine when taken into Sonic Reel DVD - but that's on a very
old, slow machine, and everything needs to be moved across the network.
Duplicated this in CS3 on a PC, and CS4 on a Mac so it's obviously
something in the way I'm encoding in Squeeze or importing into Encore.
Any one have any idea what the heck I'm doing wrong? I've been fighting
with this for almost a month now, and can't find anything on line, and
come up blank in the various forums.
Thanks!
Mark

Mark,
I do this same thing, on two different systems, and it works fine. The
only thing that I do different is that I encode in TMPG Encoder. You can
download a trial version, and it's pretty cheap and quick, but with good
quality.
Another thought...when you encode in Squeeze, are you making a single
.mpg file or separate audio and video files? Also, does squeeze have
rules about how to name the files? (.mpg or .m2v) Whatever way you're
working, try it the other way.
Good Luck,

The bizarre thing is that I've been doing this workflow for years, and
only after upgrading to Squeeze 5.0 did this start - and not at first.
I always do elementary streams - although in the course of trouble
shooting I've tried program stream with the same result.

Thanks!
Mark

Full size QT doesn't do it. Same problem, and it can take hours to do
the export.

Have you tried Adobe Media Encoder, which ships with CS3 and CS4? It makes
nice looking MPEG2 files. Even if you don't use it, it would be worth a test
to see if this is a Squeeze issue.
Also make sure you've trashed all the Encore metadata and scripting files.
Adobe is very bad about creating a ton of this stuff and then when you swap
out assets, these scripting files no longer jive with the assets and Encore
does all sorts of stupid things.

Hey guys,
I attached a DS 10 and RP/IMS Broker via Fiber to a Terrablock and
installed the DS Workgroup controller on the RP. I mounted one
Terrablock partition with 'write' permissions on the RP and gave the DS
read only permissions to this partition. I was hoping that the RP will
pick up the video from the Terrablock via the fiber cable, but it picked
up the video from the DS via the Ethernet cable, which has a slower
bandwidth.
Has anyone successfully configured a DS workgroup with a Terrablock this
way? Please share how it has been done.
Eventually I removed the RP fiber from the Terrablock, and moved the DS
Workgroup controller to run on the DS. It takes a long time for the RP
(XW9300) to read the sequence from the DS (Z800 1GbitE), mount the
drives, process and deposit the clip back to the drive. It remount the
shared network drive every time which does not make any sense. I mapped
the shared network drives, but the RP still remounted it every time.
Windows Simple File Sharing is disabled on both computers.
Is there a way for the RP to avoid remounting the drive everytime?
Thanks,
Ofer Raveh, ACSR

Ofer,
first, you should post this tot he DS list, not the L2. you'd get a
much more precise group of DS user than here. as it is, there's a few
of us DS folks lurking here, just to help stir things up every now and
then.
The DS, i believe, needs write permissions just as much as the RP does.
As it is, it sounds like you've crossed some "wires" in your setup.
first installing, then moving, then disabling. DS is a finicky setup.
Did you shut down the DS and RP when you made these changes?
restarting them both? the Workgroup and project & media indexers needs
to be up first, then the RP.
As for Terrablock, i know the guys over at Modern VideoFilm have
there's on a TB. if you know anyone there, it may be worth a call to
them.. they've had it running since early 06.

If you haven't found someone yet, we've used BEAM TV out of The Mill in
London <www.mill.co.uk> (+44 207 208 8177). I believe there is a New York
office as well.

Thank you,
I'll be trying to figure out how to make some of my higher number folders

(it's about 1TB of DV res footage... - big project - yikes)
Thanks for all pointers.
