[Avid-L2] Re: Industry Advice

You picked the absolute worst time to be looking for a pro job in LA. The market has been toast for a while here.

There is a lot of reality going on, which is where you are more likely to find FCP as the budgets are SOOOOO low.

Scripted and features, the last holdout of Avid land, are not doing much here and haven't been for at least a year. Hopefully, that will change soon as the wishful thinkers believe the new year will bring new money.

I keep getting calls from top editors who haven't had a break in over 10 years who haven't worked since September. Tough times here.

Bottom line for you is, you need to know both systems innately. They are just tools of the trade and you need to be able to use them both if you want to be be busy.

PS: If you think 4 months of low paying entry level work is "paying your dues" you're in for a rude awakening. Most of the folks on this list paid a lot more than that.

I've gone through 'paying your dues' working for free on indy films, documentaries and short-form just to get experience but they've all been Final Cut gigs.

When I browse online to look for job openings all I see are Final Cut Pro jobs. I live in L.A. and I'm pretty sure it's still an Avid town so are the Avid shops just not hiring or do you really have to know someone in the industry to catch a break? I'm willing to start at the bottom even as a logger just as long as I'm working on an Avid. Don't get me wrong...I like FCP and know it well it's just I prefer working on Avid as I'm sure most of you do too.
