[Avid-L2] monitor audio off laptop edit

How do you folks monitor your audio when working off a Laptop at a
desk ?(not talking about being mobile). I was using M-audio usb as my
interface but when I brought the project into my suite the audio mix
was horrendous. Is a small mixer the way to go using the macbook pro
audio out?
