That's one of the bestestest things about Avid -- the Trim tools. Man, you master those you're an editing Godzilla stomping a media Tokyo.

I rarely use that command to do splits. I prefer cheating it. I make a
hard, regular edit based on the most important media (audio or video),
then use extend edit on the other track to create the split. Maybe not
as elegant, but it works.
So, let's say I'm editing a conversation between two people. Cut it
with a hard video and audio edit between where one person speaks and
the next person speaks, then, if you want to L cut so that it cuts to
the second person a little earlier, mark an inpoint where you want to
have the video cut appear, deselect the audio tracks and hit the
extend button. It may take more button pushes, but I also feel like
it's easier to determine where I want the split to happen once I have
the pacing of the audio done anyway.
