Subject: [Avid-L2] Re: OT: Rates?
The average going rate for Doc editors with experience in NYC is $500/day for just the editor. I get the same regardless of the platform (Avid MC or FCP).
The sweatshops of course want to pay a whole lot less. I avoid those gigs if I can. Way too much stress and definitely hazardous to your health.
BTW when they tell me: "we don't pay overtime" my standard reply is "Good. Then we're in agreement, because I don't work it....If your budget is really tight I will try to help you out, but I do not work brutal hours for free."
I don't mind giving some hours (or even days) if it's a show I really believe has value and I'm being treated nicely, but I refuse to get F@#%#$.
(I won't say it, this is a PG list).
I generally don't charge O/T but at least offer me comp time in return or at the VERY least, tell me I did a good job. But if the hours are really brutal, I expect to be compensated.
I had one client a long time ago tell me "Don't you just love working around the clock with people you like?" My reply: "Goodbye".
They are now one of the leading "preditor" companies in NY, churning out the low end reality crap. I will drive a cab before I work for them. I am very happily editing away elsewhere, getting my rate, having most weekends and nights off and being told "Thank you! You did a good job". Then I go home and polish my Emmy.
BTW, Nat Geo is definitely NOT in the sweatshop category. They treat me very nicely when I work for them directly, which I do frequently.
EOR (End of Rant).

I'm asking this question as a matter of what's common, not what you personally charge, and I'm interested primarily in freelance rates, though it would be interesting to know how freelance and staff rates compare in a given market. Obviously, different types of work mean different types of rates, so I would like to know about:

If it's different in yours, that would interest me too. You can quote rates by the hour, the day, or the week. The assumption is that these rates are being charged by experienced editors with at least ten years under their belts, not by kids fresh out of school. I'll do the conversion of any rates stated in Euros or other, national currencies.
