Re: [Avid-L2] Local Delivery -HD vs SD / 4x3 Vs 16x9

As an agency delivering to local markets nationwide, we've had no
requirements for HD deliverables. None. Which is why we still work in SD (a
corner-office decision, not mine). Given my choice, we'd be working in HD up
to the moment of delivering final product, then output a downconverted
letterbox or center cut.

Birmingham (market forty-something) just saw its second local station go HD
for newscasts only. The first one (NBC affiliate) went HD over a year ago
but still shoots mostly SD and upconverts it at air time. Alabama Public
Television - usually an early-adopter of technology - has been transmitting
PBS in HD but now has server issues, not being able to handle the mishmash
of formats required. Their downconverted signal on cable is a mess of
inconsistency.

But things are changing slowly. Those of us who've shuffled our feet waiting
to transition will be forced into it soon enough.
