<< I enjoy the one on one creative interchange with an editor, as both of us stare at a screen and try to figure out where that next cut will lead. Even a webcam can't match that kind of collaboration, at least so far.>>
I would venture a guess that is very close in our future. There have been several versions of products out there over the last few years, like Mike Buday's. And we haven't even sen what the big guys response will be, other than FCP 7 and the ability to play out from the timeline over iChat.
Again, the biggest problem is that the editors pushed for this. They pushed hard to get the producers out of their bays. (And I understand why) But the side effect is that the producers no longer need to be in the bay. This may fall under "Be careful what you wish for."
On a side note, I remember back in the early 80s meeting an editor who built a film edit room in a motor home. He would take a job and go up to the mountains and edit for a few weeks then come back and show his cut. So none of what is going on is a new idea, just technologically refined.
