The reason it works for you and not for John is probably that you are creating the effect and are in the same project. he probably just got the finished sequence in a bin and has created a new project for it. This scenario throws Avid's handling of motion effects and groups for a serious spin.
If you want to thoroughly test this, take your sequence bin to another system, decompose, then try linking back. you will see what John is talking about.
