[Avid-L2] Maintaining the dongle with upgrade?

Got the upgrade from pre 3.5 to 4.x for media composer software.  Trying to remember the order of upgrading dongle before uninstalling 3.1.x or do I uninstall the existing system and install the new version and then upgrade the dongle.  I seem to recall when launching the new software there is a dialogue about using software activation or keeping dongle.  Just trying to sort this out while I download 4.0.2  TIA
