[Avid-L2] AE lower thirds look bad

I never use AE for lower thirds because, as limited as the title tool
is, I think the titles look much more crisp. But I wanted some motion
so giving it another try. But they just look cruddy. Project is DV
widescreen so I created graphics in AE with comp settings DV
widescreen NTSC, 29.97. Renders are interlaced lower. Importing into
Avid MC soft v2.6.4 and have tried all the import settings. Something
is wrong in my work flow. Anyone do this on a regular basis?
