Hmm.
Is there XML support that could force to relink?
(Stripping out the metadata on the XML might do it, but it's hard to hack flying blindfolded...)
Oh, did i mention i HATE apple nowadays?

Although FCP X is not as fussy as it was when first released, when the problem John mentions was a real issue, it is still very fussy about relinking media. But for this specific issue, I have no real idea.Phlipo

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but I had files go offline in FCPX after opening them in Adobe AE (maybe PPro, memory is fuzzy) Apparently Adobe added XMP metadata to the files, which FCPX didn't like. Even though the timecode and reel names matched, I was never able to reconnect those files. Turning off XMP on Adobe programs prevented future occurrences. Luckily, I had a backup. The point is, FCPX is looking at something metadata related in addition to the more mundane TImecode/Reelname stuff.Maybe Phil Hodgetts might be of Intelligent Assistance here, if he's lurking...
