I believe OSX is actually based on BSD, not Linux. But it's not too
different from a functional perspective.
A lot of graphics software from companies such as Discreet and Alias was
originally for SGI systems. SGI ran their own version of Unix, and their OS
was architecturally similar in many ways to modern Linux and Mac OS X. When
PCs got faster and SGI started to have business problems, software written
for SGI moved first to Linux and later to OS X. These included Discreet (now
Autodesk), Alias, and others.
There are lots of reasons to like Linux. Because it is completely
open-source, you can download and read the source code and figure out
exactly how things work. There are tons of free and open-source libraries /
toolkits / compilers, etc. for programming Linux in any language you like.
And the OS is extremely customizable, so it can be built to scale up in
interesting ways (massively parallel computing, for example). I think it's
safe to say that all of these capabilities have been leveraged in some way
by the companies creating software for color grading, animation, etc.
