When you say the standard SMPTE bars method are you referring to using the X-Rite probe with a smpte bar signal or are you referring to looking at blue only and matching the chips? I always check the blue only just to see where I stand but I know it's just a poor man's method and not any kind of real quality accessment.

FYI - if your monitor is way off, it is probably better to get it professionally recalibrated than doing it yourself with entry level tools. Flanders for example will recalibrate your monitor for free. You only pay for shipping to/from.
