DS will link to Red files although the 2 Red only features I graded in DS with linked footage (4K) was Pre Epic. I'm not sure how DS handles Epic files (I believe you can link to them....Tony??), although I have a successful workflow for finishing 4K for 4K output in DS for an upcoming series. The footage is XAVC from F55 which needs to be converted to DPX via Resolve (yes, we could and may grade in Resolve for this, but also need DS for graphics and other editing tweaks) to get into DS. I have also been working with a lot of C Log C300 footage in DS and it is great! The job I started this thread with, is a quick turnaround/lower budget thing and they want to be able to access Red color space occasionally and repo shots in the HD canvas, so MC7/Symphony seems perfect for this type of job. Everything changing fast.
