The helmet version is very different from the wrap-around image projection system. IMAX had a wrap-around projection system called IMAX OMNI that used a semi-hemispherical theater screen. The result was outstanding and not as disorienting. The idea was not to provide 3-D vision with depth. It was more like filling the viewer's peripheral vision, which is more important for a realistic immersive experience than 3-D is. This was what Cinerama in the 1950's and '60's was all about and has never been as well recreated since.
