I state:
Legacy material or material we get from outside 30 Rock will most
likely be either 4x3 centered with side panels added or they'll be
blown up to fill the 16x9 screen. There will always be old SD 4x3
material to deal with. But inside the building, we're all HD now,
baby. When you're talking about changing over a facility this large,
it's a big deal to finally be all HD.
The AFD (Automatic Frame Description) flag affects how the HD picture
is to be displayed on an SD (NTSC) TV. It was decided that News &
Sports shows shall be center-cut on 4x3 TVs. Entertainment shows are
to air letterboxed. The transition IS complete. This is how it will
be. The choice only affects SD 4x3 TV viewing.
As time passes, 4x3 TVs will become less and less common. Therefore,
the problem will atrophy on its own, but will probably never go away
completely.
