Personally I think everyone should letterbox any sd downconvert and it
would be a moot point.
I say:
That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. My company chooses to
center-cut News & Sports shows when viewed in SD 4x3. This
acknowledges that part of our audience still watches in SD 4x3 and
there will probably always be viewers who watch on 4x3 TVs. They
think these viewers want to see their screens filled top to bottom; no
black bands above or below. I guess they've done surveys or focus
groups, I don't know. It's not a compromise to include all viewers of
our programming. I don't understand your reasoning because no matter
whether you letterbox or center-cut, this still only affects SD 4x3
display, a dwindling group of viewers. Granted, the graphics are
tailored for 4x3 viewing, but I'm personally not bothered by the text
placement in 16x9. Maybe I'm used to it, but it looks fine to me.
Keep in mind that we are STILL dealing with the legacy of NTSC by
using 29.97 as the frame rate. Think about it: NTSC is dead and
buried but we are still making video at 29.97fps! That to me is FAR
crazier than this letterbox vs center-cut controversy.
The point I must return to is that our product is now entirely HD
16x9. We are no longer recording, editing or outputting SD material.
