Hi everyone, hopefully someone might have some insight into an on-going problem we are experiencing....
We've got a Sony HDW-1800 that we're attempting to create a HD1080Psf23.976 master with Dolby-E (data) on audio channels on 1 and 2. The video output is absolutely fine but the Dolby-E data is getting corrupted upon recording and will not playback.
We've done countless HD1080i59.94 masters with Dolby-E but this is the first with 23.976. My testing indicates it's the HDCAM deck because I can successfully digital cut to HDCAM-SR 23.976 (SRW-5800) or pass the signal from the Avid to any other suite (FCP included) and maintain the Dolby-E. BUT when I digital cut to the HDW-1800 OR dub from HDCAM-SR to the HDW-1800 the Dolby-E gets damaged.
Here's the workflow:
- HDCAM's firmware is 2.20
- HDCAM menu #013 (System Frequency) is set to 1080p23.98Psf
- HDCAM menu #822 (Non-audio Output) is set for 'Burst' on Tracks 1/2
- HDCAM menu #309 (Servo Reference) set to 'Auto1' (as recommended by Sony)
- HDCAM menu #317 (Audio Edit) set to 'Cut'
- HDCAM 'REF VID' (Reference) is set to 'VID' (as recommended by Sony, although we've tried 'INPUT' too)
- Tri-level sync is patched to both Avid and HDCAM @ 1080Psf23.976
- Avid 1080p23.976 project (MC version 6.01)
- Avid Video Output Tool's Sync Lock is set to 'Reference'. Audio Output settings set to 'Direct Out'
- import the Dolby-E as a 24-bit WAV file as a Stereo pair
- test the Dolby-E file using the Neyrinck SoundCode RTAS plugin (then remove)
- Audio project is set to 'Keep Dolby E Material Safe' = 'Yes'
- under Deck Configuration the deck Auto Configures as a 'Sony HDW-500 24P' (although we've also tried forcing it to 'HDW-1800 24P')
- Digital Cut Tool with all tracks enabled, Bit Depth: 10-bit. INSERTING Video and Audio via HDSDI to an already blacked tape (although we've also tried assembling)
- Re-digitize the tape via HDSDI with the Dolby-E tracks (1/2) set as a stereo pair
- Drop on a timeline and test again using the Neyrinck SoundCode RTAS plugin
When the Dolby-E is NOT damaged (in the case of suite-to-suite or from HDCAM-SR) the audio waveform is virtually identical to the source. When the Dolby-E is damaged the audio waveform looks nearly identical EXCEPT it's delayed by approximately 16 samples and has a spike at that's approximately 30 samples before the end of the frame.
Any thoughts or wild guesses on things to try? We've called Sony and they've told us to check the menu settings above but without luck.
