I don't have this drive, but I was wondering if it'd be worth your while & ultimately easier to crack open the enclosure and use it as a bare drive instead if you can't find a resolution. If you're using a Mac Pro with an open bay, pop it in there or maybe pick up a drive dock or WiebeTech. My philosophy is that if you're getting errors that make no sense, you could be walking through the door to actual transfer errors or corruptions and compromising your data.

Back in ancient (AVR) days, that error would occasionally pop when the Avid was trying to close the first segment of a multi-segment file during digitize / capture. For example, digitizing rather noisy or complex footage at AVR 75 or AVR 77 might bail after just a few minutes with that NO FRAME BOUNDARY error -- and the numbers were right in the ballpark of where that first 2GB chunk would end and the second would start.

Sounds suspiciously similar… and I'll bet a dollar the problem is on import.

Or use the Sony viewer (free, for mac and win), and / or use FCP an import
it there :-)
Or send it to the broadcaster, they check it anyways (automatic checks).

Not really, as that has all been verified and lined up. Just want to make sure the file plays back.

Also, I found I can AMA-link to the exported MXF. That works. Not sure why the export is not working.

I'm assuming you want some sort of actual monitor output and audio meters
and scopes and all that good stuff.

If not, you can certainly use the Sony Clip Browser program. If you do need
real monitoring, then the only solution I've come across is to export that
file to a Sony XDCAM disc and play back in a PDWHD 1500 deck.

[Avid-L2] Checking exported MXF Op1a files

L.S.,

Using MC6 and exporting a 1080i50 sequence as MXF Op1a MPEG50, 24bit, in order to supply to a public broadcaster. Want to check the result, by importing back into MC6. Works on the shorter clips, but when trying to import a 50 min. file, when the progress bar is at something like 20%, MC6 tells me there's a NO FRAME BOUNDARY error.

Problem is: I don't know if the problem is in the export or the import. Besides tracking the bug, I'm just trying to make sure that my exported MXF will play at the broadcaster's end. Any tips how to play it back without importing into Avid?

[Avid-L2] Was Can't resize Timeline Window. Now 6.0.1 TT weirdness.

Ah - or is it? On two Macs (one on 10.6.8 and one on 10.7.2) I find that the settings for the first graphic object in the Avid TT stay around for any other objects. If I make some text, change the fill colour, add a border and a shadow etc, when I deselect that object and start a new one, the same settings are applied so each parameter has to be reset. In earlier versions this only happened if you changed parameters with the selection tool active but no object selected. This is a right PITA, especially the shadow as if softness has been applied, it means going into the Object menu and setting the value to zero.

Lou - we've been using GoFlex for Mac, 2TB (both the silver & the black ones) for some of our "remote" based projects and have NOT had only so-so luck with them. It's ironic because I have just now returned from my local Apple store where I just picked up a Hitachi G-Tech 2TB drive, as we are experiencing very similar issues with a GoFlex for Mac, 2TB (silver color) using the same specs as you, FW 800.
FWIW, the 'silver' ones seem FAR MORE problematic than the BLACK ones do.

Sorry I can't offer any more specific info, just know you're not alone with the Seagate GoFlex dive issues. I've also seen posts here on the L that basically say the same thing - avoid the Seagate GoFlex drives whenever possible.

[Avid-L2] OT: North American Spanish Translation

Good Morning All -

Looking for recommendations on getting a translation to North American Spanish, and VO cut for a 5
-7 minute training video.

My Spanish is good enough that I can probably replace the English track without too much trouble,
but I need the translation and read done, and I need a rough cost to tell the client. MP3
delivery over the web is fine. Video in English can be provided for a reference.

Subbits can read STL and output for Avid (and a lot of other formats...)..
But, Avid itself can output a simple text file, looking like this:

title two, just one line

<end subtitles>

So, if you want to translate a show with subcap and want to be cheap, export
this,
translate the lines in any text editor (do respect the line break and empty
lines, do not toch the TC's),
import and be done with it.

I usually have set up in the TimeCode window a separate display line for
Mas 30 DF. This gives me both the 23.98 TC as in the master sequence and
what its equivalent is in 30 DFTC (real running time) *provided* that my
program starts at the exact head of the sequence. Makes it easier I think
when you're laying out a cut to know exactly how far away you are from
44:50 running time.

And yes, the center duration (and I/O in the timecode window) show the
count at 24TC regardless.

[Avid-L2] Seagate Go flex issues

I just got a Seagate, GoFlex for Mac, 3TB to dump some overflow media onto for a while. Trying to copy media mover offline folder. Right now about 750 Gigs. But it only goes for a few minutes and then it stops giving me the "media mover can't copy, files in use" error.

Not sure if this is a file size issue or drive issue. Firewire 800 connection. After that error, if I go to dump the files, I get "error -50) Have to restart to dump the files off the seagate.

Drive was formatted with Mac Drive utility.

[Avid-L2] Actual duration in a 23.98 Project?

To figure out the actual running time in a 23.98 project the technique I've heard used is to take the master sequence code and switch it to 30DF. Then the segment that starts at 1;00;00;00 will have an actual duration of the ending time code. This makes sense but when looking at the timeline for an entire show that ends at 1:44:50:00 in 24 frame code then the end frame jumps to 1;44;52;13 ish when viewed in 30 DF mode. I get why that happens just like the drop vs non drop difference in 30 frame code happens. The curiosity is that the "Center Duration" calculation still shows a duration of 44:50 after marking and in and out. Does the center duration always calculate based on the 24 frame master code of the sequence regardless of whether you toggle the sequence timecode to 30DF? I'm thinking that it does, at least that's what we are seeing. Can anyone confirm or deny?

First thing they would do is bring the old "Lift" button back. Then after you use it 20 times you would start seeing ads for gym memberships showing up in the title tool.

One could only imagine what type of ads would start showing up after over use of the "Trim Tail" button!

open the QT in QT7 do command j and go to the audio tab, you will probably see that ch1 and ch2 of the audio are set to MONO. this will mix both together. change these to either left right or discrete 1 discrete 2.

this is also the way red was writing there proxies which was annoying, if you have a lot of clips, then make an automator to do this change.

I reverted to 6.0.0 and this resizing bug went away.
It's actually a known issue and a bug report has been made.
I guess it's sporadic and not everyone is experiencing it . . . so I'm not sure what the conditions are that cause it.

Well . . . not seeing this with my Timeline but I am seeing it with a
bin with several other tabbed bins in there. Drag bottom corner out a
little and it jams. I can move it around but not resize it. May be a
user setting issue as I see it in one location with one bunch of
settings but not in another. Deleting bin layout makes no diffference.

Thank you John. You just solved an issue I've been dealing with for months
now and posted about here as well. I've been thinking it was a drive
permissions error all along and have never thought to look at folders.
Sequences from one certain Avid here just would not see my INT RAID and
sure enough the media from his Avid that was moved to my system had folders
with read only selected.

I tried that but it didn't seem to help. The various folders were still read only when I did that to the drive alone. I don't know if ignore ownership overrides the read only status. It didn't seem to but I only tried it on the drive and not the get info for the folders and sub folders. Now it's working but all the media files in the folder are still read only. I imagine there is a way to highlight them all and change them to read/write access or do I have to go to the folder they are in and set it to inherit from the parent folder. I'm more familiar with the PC side of parent and subfolder behavior. Is there an equivalent on the Mac side?

I can't figure why it shows up as read-only - that usually happens with
read-only media (like DVDs, etc.). Maybe the user has read-only permission
to the Unity drive, and the system is trying to obey permissions across all
volumes per file?

A better solution in your case though might be to get info on your local
RAID, and check the box that says "Ignore ownership on this volume". You
shouldn't have to worry about it after that I would think. This is how I
have set any local media drives on all my systems and I never have to worry
about permissions issues on them.

If you Get Info on the drive you can set it to "ignore ownership on this
volume".
